Elite Dangerous was perfect with 4GB gtx960 1080p AAx4. But the alpha of Odyssey I think need at least 6GB for 1080p. I can only play in 720p with no AA. This vram usage is a sign of the lack of optimisation of the game. The older version was very optimized and very light, because I had absolutely no boost going from a core2quad to a ryzen 5 on it. On the opposite, cities skyline loves the 12 cores very much, and uses them all, whils only using 2gb of vram.

Not going to watch the video. The proper question is. How much memory GPU WILL you need. There was a time it was 512 mg. Then 1 GB and then 2 GB was lots. Then 4GB was enough. Now 8 GB is what you need. Guess what the next number will the not to distant future. And the answer is ...12 GB. That should last your card comfortably for the next 2 to 3 years. After that the GPU itself will be the problem sooo..get a new one. Poor NOlocalrs...running out of things to talk about.

'back in the day' they use to make cards with a standard and a doubling amount of RAM. like a 512MB and a 1GB version. Typically the double-sized ram option would be a few fps lower in performance for some reason, but it was almost always worth buying because even 1GB was not nearly enough at the time. Thing is, I am on a GTX 1080 with 8GB of ram now, which was enough when I bought it for a 1080p display, and enough when I moved to 2 1080p displays, and is starting to fill up now that I have a 4k display. Probably the first card where the amount of Ram was 'enough' to satisfy my needs through the whole lifespan of the card. But now we have been at 8GB for 4 years now, and most cards are only going up to 10-12GB? That is about adequate for today at 4k... but no way it is going to last 3-4 years until the next upgrade. Once buying GPUs is 'a thing' again I am probably going to go the AMD route for the first time since they were ATI just to get a card that is future proof enough to last a few years without issues.

Tomb raider does not use 6gb at 1080p. You should not use ultra textures on a 1080p panel on any 4gb or 6gb card because ultra textures loads 4K textures to your card to be down scaled. In 2010 ultra was 1080p textures but now it is much higher. They really should drop the texture setting and have it match your resolution setting. if you confirmed tomb raider was using 1080p texture at say medium texture setting it would then run around 2gb I would guess

My results show a very interesting history of improvement from Team Red. I used a 2gb RX 460 right up to April 2020, when in rapid succession I got an 8 gb RX 580 and then a 6gb 5600XT. Now, due to some unknown reason, probably heat, the 5600 XT doesn't post, 'graphics card fail' bios beep codes courtesy of Gigabyte. The 580 is soldiering on and what I am using right now. I don't think it was the case (rvz-02) or I would be experiencing the same issues with the 580 I think. It's interesting to note that even with just 6gb, the 5600 XT *was* way faster when it did work. This is likely due to the massive improvement between Polaris and Navi (I skipped Vega, kept losing auctions on eBay). That said, I had to upgrade from an even older HD 6450 1gb because many of my games were struggling, even older ones that used to work as optimizations and patches for newer hardware came out. And by older ones I mean like Star Trek Online and EVE Online. Champions Online stopped loading terrain textures and was literally just showing the wireframes on the 6450! The 460 did better, and I used it for years, pining for a Vega card or a fancy nVidia card I couldn't afford. And just for the Team Green guys, it was a matter of money. Used 700 through 900 cards, much less anything new were still out of my budget, hence the used 6450 and 580 referenced above. The 5600 XT was bought new, making its early demise all the more painful. Still, from the 6450 to the 5600XT, there's almost a decade of experience in improvement from Team Red, probably because I missed Vega. (grin)

Yup, I've been saying for years, double buffer VRAM on GPUs that don't have enough Bandwidth is dumb. GPUs with double buffer VRAM existed before due to Crossfire and SLI as VRAM didn't stack it was mirrored, now that multi-GPUs are dead, there is no purpose for double buffer VRAM GPUs. The RTX 3060Ti should have been a 6GB GPU for 320$ MSRP and the RTX 3060 should have been a 6GB VRAM GPU for 260$ MSRP. Not that it matters, because they are out of stock anyway and if they were, they would cost way beyond MSRP, but oh well.

Developer point of view: if you get any loading screens or stutter, you could do with more VRAM (until you can fit all game assets on your VRAM). User point of view: everything is generally fixed by the developers so you never need more VRAM than you have and they generally make it so it never exceeds the minimum amount most users have for the time. TLDR: resolution should only impact VRAM by a couple hundred MB compared to the 50ish GB of game-play assets that a developer is trying to fit in your VRAM. The main use for more VRAM is holding more visual assets (3d models, textures, etc) so the game doesn't have to talk with the hard disk as much. Resolution scaling works by checking what texture is "seen" by each area of the screen and overlaying that onto the screen. The only point where the resolution really impacts the VRAM usage is when storing frame buffers. In this case if we were rendering to 4k frame using a 32 bit (4 byte) colour pallet. That is (3840*2160)*4 = less than 32MB. even if we have 3 frame-buffers and a couple extra to help with port processing, that's 5 * 32MB = 160MB total (60 fps just means it cycles trough all 3 buffers 20 times per second). given 1440p is about half the number of pixels, that would be about 80MB for buffering. Given your game is likely 45GB of visual assets, your resolution won't change much.

Making us feel guilty and cheap not having enough ram when graphic card in 2021 are only sold to scalpers and bitcoin big shots ! made no more available to common mortals unless under $2K to $3.5K here in Canada ! If nothing change for the next few years I can only see these game creators going out of work ! Game creators just have to design a scale down graphic mode game options like they did 4-5 years ago who ran perfect even with only 2 gig rams ! I see to many new games now days that demand 8 gig of ram but their graphic is prehistoric like the arcade game we first saw on nintendo , I just can't understand how they can make their graphic requirement so high with result so poor ! If they could make a console running 4K graphics or more with a standard USB input to connect and quality mouse that would run very titles I would quit the PC world so fast !
