I am building my own pc after 20 years, kind of terrified. Also might have spent 15k on it.... BUT I went AMD and managed to score a 3090 (for 1300 more than MSRP), YEAH I went threadripper 3990x (I don't really game, oh I'm never going to realistically use 64 of those cores and could have gone with the ryzen 7 series), but if I built a computer 10 years ago, would totally go with intel. I bought AMD stock when Zen 1 was announced, literally have made over 300% on that stock. Tesla was another one I bought when they were fumbling and bumbling about due to their catching fire issue, and again, made a killing off of that stock as well, only about 200% return on that. And I don't play the stock market. I know tech, and that's it.

I'm all in favor of getting a Ryzen 5 CPU and think that this family is better than Intel's offering at the moment. But, I wouldn't feel comfortable if I was AMD as they are winning a war using a 7nm process vs 14nm. If intel manages to stay competitive even at this process gap, I can't imagine AMD staying on top if/when Intel has a 7nm part. The technology is here, things are going to get tough (to say the least) for AMD once Intel manages to close the process gap.

I wonder if the truth behind the rise of prices, lays in the stream of ignorant idiots joining the gaming market? There has to be something more to tech companies suddenly being able to squeeze every cent out of their customers these days. When I was young, the best of the best CPU's went for about 2k, and the best GPU's for 2.5-4k. And those were the very top of the line stuff. The stuff the rich boys bought to play games like WoW and CS at top FPS scores. We're talking the days of Pentium dual-core cpu's. My brother and I bought the best of the best from a guy who was selling in preparation for building the next top tier comp, when the parts came out. And it cost us the equivalent of 800 dollars. It was the equivalent of a 5k dollars computer today. And we were the envy of every boy both my age and his. The other kids at school rated their computers in terms relative to ours, and laughed at the ones that thought theirs was as good(because pretty much nobody spent that kind of money on computers back then. And we got a good deal already. Getting something similar would have cost at least 1.2k dollars on average - Even as a second hand buy. And that was back then). It had all the best hardware, and all the top tier cooling from Thermaltake(which were known as the best in the cooling market back then. That obviously did not last), along with heat monitoring equipment. The CPU in question later got famous for being the first CPU in history, that they managed to overclock to 6 ghz, using liquid nitrogen for cooling(and it even ran for a little while without crashing). The whole point tho? You could get the absolute top tier gear for about 1k dollars. And I mean the absolute best stuff. Not the almost best. Nowadays? Just getting the best graphics card will cost you AT LEAST twice as much. And often, it will cost even more than that. And building the best rig will cost you at least 5-6k dollars. Perhaps more. And in exchange, the development has on the overall almost grinded to a halt. From 2011, until 2018. There was no actual reason for me get a new CPU. An overclocked 2500k was confirmed to not even throttle a 1080 ti. And an upgrade for gaming was basically obsolete. And even then, getting a 2080 TI seemed relatively pointless. The upgrades weren't good enough to either justify the price, nor do much for what you'd likely want it for. Basically until the release of the new AMD cards and 3000 series in late 2020, there was 0 reason to upgrade. I have now. But honestly? The only reason to, was to game in 4k. A full decade with no real reason to upgrade my rig(well, m.2 SDD's too. But they were semi relevant, especially in the start of their release. A normal high grade SSD worked just fine). Graphic has improved significantly. But still not at the pace one would have expected(which most realize is due to the competition between Nvidia and Radeon/AMD falling off. Something only changed with this most recent launch. Where AMD caught up with the 6800 xt).

The lower end market is also seeing an advantage from AMD, as the new Athlon APUs are seeing much better integrated graphics performance than the Pentiums or Celerons. Yes, it's not quite powerful, but it can play eSports titles and GTA 5 easily. A 5000 series Athlon would mean business for the low end market.
